Report Aggressive Driving In Massachusetts
I was driving home from playing a bunch of board games in P-town just a bit ago, and I was driving home. On the highway home, I was cruising along in the fast lane doing maybe 5 over limit (what everyone else in the lane was doing) and in my rearview mirror I see a silver car coming up fast, changing lanes constantly every time there was the slightest opening. At least three times that I saw. Without signalling, and I would guess going at least 10 mph faster than I was.
He pulls up slightly ahead of me in the right lane and I notice that it's some model of BMW. I will note at this point that the highway I am driving home on is called the 'Sunset Highway', because it effectively points directly towards the sun as it sets. It's about 8:15 or 8:30, and the sun is just then setting, so it's in everyone's eyes, making it more dangerous to drive at this time. Anyway, there's a car ahead of him preventing him from passing me, so I glance over to make a note of his liscense plate, as I figure this guy is just an accident waiting to happen, and it couldn't hurt to look at it.
Anyway, the guy in front of him gets out of his way (I think he sped up because he was afraid of the guy too) and the guy swerves into my lane with about 1 foot less clearance than he needs. I swerve away to avoid a collision (I'm fairly sure there would have been one otherwise) and honk at him. He flips me the bird and immediately takes the next exit. Immediately, as in, when I honked he started a turn to bring him back into the right lane and the turn away from me continued to be enough to cause him to take the exit.
So from this I can conclude one or more of the following:
1. He was pissed at me for blocking his path for ~5 precious seconds so swerved at me to 'get back at me', or
2. Was having a bit of fun by pretending to swerve at me right before taking his exit, or
3. Nearly swerved into me by recklessness, then took the next exit to avoid me getting his plat number (which I already had), or
4. Was unaware that his exit was coming up and was just being an all-around bad driver.
My exit was just 2 miles or so further down the road. On the way there, I repeated the plate number to myself, and I parked soon after to get a sandwich, and at that point I wrote the plate numbers down.
TL;DR: So anyway, to get to the point, if I went to the police station and tried to file a report (or whatever) that I saw a car with plate number ### XXX driving recklessly would it do any good? I work in the same building as one of the local police precincts, so it's not like it would be exceptionally hard to come in to work a bit early and make a stop over there. But really I want to know if this could accomplish something or if I would just annoy the cops there and waste their time.
